Yep.  That was what this weekend was about.   I spent time gathering ideas for two rooms in our house.

Never hurts to flip through some old magazines.  I am still in the idea phase.  I am taking my time on these two rooms because they the rooms we spend the most time in…. Kitchen and bedroom.  Fun, stuff!

Fabulous weekend weather wise.  Low 80s and beautiful sun.  Summer dresses and sandals.

Don’t you love lazy weekends?

Enough of my Monday morning ramblings.  Time to seize the day.

Remember this?

This was  the ‘party’ room in our new house.  Wasn’t it great? Full of character.  Evidence of a life lived.  However, it would not work for us.  On Monday, I went to see the house.  Move in is fast approaching.  When I was shown the ‘party’ room I was giddy!!!  This will be our family room, tv room.

A clean slate!!!  This the same view as the first picture.  What a difference, right!

Here is the other size of the room.  It is very generous. I am so excited to take over this space.  I am ready to make it our home.

Great things to come!

Bed, home

Strange that one piece of furniture can make you dream, long for its existence.  Last week, due to my new job, I stayed with a wonderful friend.  We had a great time staying up talking and laughing.  I have her entire third floor at my disposal.

However, I missed home.  I missed Hubby.  I missed my bed.  We have had the same bed frame for 22 years.  Mattresses have come and gone.  That bed is part of home to me.  Great books have been read, fabulous music listened too, and Hubby and I have solved the world’s problems in that bed.

Friday evening I came home and just went and laid in it. I wiggled around and just smiled.  A little slice of heaven.  Life is so good.

This week I am back with my friend.   I am more than positive that we will have a blast each evening.  But just know that I will be dreaming of my bed….

home, moving, remodeling

As you know we are moving to a new house in April.  This past Wednesday, after work, I was asked to come by and check on the progress.  My pleasure!!!!

I picked out the new wood flooring.  That was a lot of fun.  I also picked out the tile for the bathrooms.

I took a few shots of the progress.  Please keep in mind that it was dark and they are redoing the wiring for some of the light fixtures.  Basically, some of the shots are dark!

This is the master bedroom.  The wallpaper is off.  The carpet was next.

This will be the office.  Wallpaper gone.  The new tub is waiting to be installed.

The tile for the bathrooms.  I liked the texture.

simplydaisies

The master bathroom will be enlarged by ‘stealing’ some space from the powder room.  This is the powder room.  The tile will be removed and the necessary fixtures will be put in.

Entryway.  The old tile has been ripped up and now that I have selected the wood, it will be going in.

I am getting excited.  I know that it will be worth the wait.  Come on April!

Happy Monday!

Treasures from being lost

Black Forest, decorating, Germany, glass blowing, home

Happy mistakes sometimes lead to finding new treasures!  That is what happened this past weekend.  Got lost and found a glass blowing factory.

Everything in our home has a story.  I do not put something in our house without it having a meaning.  It our living history museum.  The items I found at the glass place will forever be known in our house as the lost treasure.  Fitting somehow.

So many decisions I had to make…  I love glass balls.  I had a very tough time selecting that perfect one.

simplydaisies

This was the lucky one.  A very soft blue.  When I look at this, I am thinking clouds.

Another treasure I found is now hanging beautifully from one of the kitchen windows.

simplydaisies

The blue is just powerful.  Bold even.  Doesn’t that just say, good morning?

The grand treasure is this…

simplydaisies

I bet you have no clue what this is!  It is a fly catcher.  Yes, a fancy one.  You are suppose to take off the top and add a little  juice, vinegar, and a drop of soap.  I doubt that I ever use it for that.  It is just to pretty.  I love unique treasures.  I think I found it in this item!

We had a wonderful time visiting the Black Forest.  The people were so nice.  Who would not be with so much beauty surrounding them.

Happy Thursday everyone!

home, Relaxing, stress, workouts

Have you ever had signs that you know is blinking bright neon?  I am not very good at actually paying attention to those….

It has been a very rigorous couple of weeks. (Understatement…)  I thrive better in controlled well planned situations.  However, chaos is fun.  Especially when I can see what needs to be done.

Last Friday, I had a sign that I really need to just slow down.  Getting in my car, I am making sure I have everything- purse (check), chai (check), gym bag (check), phone (check).   Smile.  I’m happy.  However, with my mind already on work and my workout after school (yes, I love thinking about my workouts!), I did not put my phone in my purse….. I left it on the hood of my car….

So, I’m driving to work and suddenly hear a thump.  I actually thought I ran over something.  I pulled over to see if I hit some animal.  Nope.  I continue on to work when I suddenly realize that I cannot find my phone.  It takes all of two seconds to realize that the thump was my iPhone.  Sigh….  I guess that OtterBox was tested!

I was so angry at myself.  But I took it for what it meant.  S-L-O-W Down!  One thing at a time.

I will go and get another phone this week.  In the meantime, I just plan on soaking in life.  At work, I will work.  When I workout, I will workout.  When I’m at home, I will enjoy being surrounded by family, comfort, and love.  Keeping this in mind might save the next phone I purchase this week!

This weekend the temperatures were nice.  A little cardi was needed.  I decided to ride the Fall wave.

Our Fall wreath is now ready to welcome our friends.

As the season progresses, I will gladly add more…. Everywhere!

This is just such a wonderful time of the year.  To know that I have just started getting the house ready, gives me something to look forward to in the coming weeks!

Happy Monday.

The Whole Scene

home, living room

Last week I showed you one of my favorite parts of my living room (see post on Setting the Scene). I thought that today I would show you the rest of the room.

Our living room is something like watching a dream come true. Before we moved into this house in July, we had owned the same sofa for over 20 years. It was SOOOOO ready for retirement. We had a slipcover over it for a reason….. I loved that sofa though. It was one of those 90s pieces with huge flowers on it. The cushions had been molded just right for reading. However, it had seen better days. So we left it behind when we moved!

Since we knew well in advance that we were moving and we knew that our sofa would be going to that sofa place in the sky, I began looking for a sofa. We wanted leather. End of story. It took oh about nine months, but we finally found a set that we both loved. At first I was worried that they were going to be to dark, but after viewing it every single day for the last six months, I’m in love.

Too much information??? Sorry! As I have stated before a home should be you. We have strove to have a comfortable, lived in adobe.

We love the fireplace that centers the room!  At this time of year, it is well used!   The rug is a thrift store find.  It is the anchor for the room.  Cozy, warm, and relaxing was the aim for this room.  I envisioned a lot of reading, talking, and listening to music in here.  I could not have been happier with the end result!  Hubby and I enjoy lighting a fire, opening up a bottle of wine and share each end of the sofa as we read.  Great place to unwind!

simplydaisies

Here is a closer look at the sofa.  I love pillows.  The shrunk behind it was bought on our first time in Germany. It houses our stereo.  Family photos and my collection of bells  are displayed.

Believe it or not, I found this plow on the side of a road!  I grabbed it and gave it a home.  The picture is the Egyptian version of the Tree of Life.  I bought it when we took Amazing Daughter there for her high school graduation.  There is just something about the Tree of Life that fascinates me.

simpledaisies

simpledaisies

Here is the other side of the room.  The loveseat is home of more pillows!  It was a beautiful sunny day!

simplydaisies

simplydaisies

The cabinet is another thrift store find!  We use it to store our wine.  Underneath it we have a wooden box of our favorite Riesling.  Long gone…. We love art.  We have started to collect books from the art museums that we have gone to.  We should have done that a long time ago!

simplydaisies

simplydaisies

On this wall, I have one of favorite art posters.  It is The Artist’s Studio by Vermeer.  We saw the original in Vienna.  The two quilts in the basket were given to me by my grandmothers.  I proudly display them.  I can not imagine the time that went into those quilts or the memories that they hold.  For me, they are a reminder of two wonderful ladies that I got to know and cherish.

Well that is the whole scene of our living room.  Warm, cozy and us.

design, entryways, home

The entry to your house is like a book cover.  You want it to entice your guest as they walk in.  It is the first impression of you and your home.

Thinking about that, my entry way fails miserable!  What does it say…. well first it would say hi.  Not HI!  WELCOME.  It is understated and not well….welcoming.  There are a few items that I love.  We have a light fixture that we picked up in Turkey that warms the space with a burst of color.

simplydaisies

I have a tapestry of the Tree of Life that is just simply beautiful.

But besides that, it just does not do anything for me!  And I fret to think about what my guest think!

BORING!!!!

I have been looking for inspiration.  Of course, the first place I go is Pinterest.

Here is first inspiration.  I really like the combination of mirrors, table and baskets.

But then I saw this….

I really LOVE this bench.

My goal is weekend is to spruce up my entryway.  It is my first DIY project of the year.  I’m excited!!!  I’m on the hunt for…. well I will see!

Do not worry.  There will be before and after photos of the transformation.  Can’t wait to share!

Home.  That is one powerful word.  It brings many things to mind.  When I think of the word home, I immediately think of family, comfort, memories, haven, and laundry.  (Yes laundry!!!)  Hubby has always said that he did not care how the home was decorated it only had to be comfortable.  That statement has always been my mantra when it comes to our home.  We have had 13 homes in our 24 years of marriage.  The longest we have ever stayed in one house was 5 years.  So maybe I should have added mobile to my list of words!  In those 13 homes, I have always strived to make each one of them ours.

We moved into our ‘new’ home in July.  When we came down to look at it last March, I knew in about 5 seconds we were moving in.  As they say, it was calling my name- LOUDLY.  There might have been some neon lights going off, I do not recall.

When I look at a room, I break it apart.  I want to create little scenes that add to the big picture.

DSCN1086

This is the corner of our living room.  It happens to be one of my favorites in the house.  Each of the elements that have created this scene are finds that take me down memory lane.

DSCN1102

This picture is a treasure to me.  The  lady holding the infant who is dressed in a golden gown looks over you as you sit in the chair.   I actually picked up the print from a school that I use to teach at.  It was part of an old curriculum buy that was about to be tossed.  So all I paid for was to get it framed!

DSCN1082

The chair itself is the most expensive part of the scene.  I paired it with a kilim pillow and a throw that I bought in Ireland a few years back.  Hubby, Amazing Daughter, and I were on vacation when we drove the Ring of Kerry. (Driving on the wrong side of the road was memory within itself!!!)  One of the shops on that famed road was a shop that sold Aran made goods.  The patterns and their meanings were beautiful to learn about.

Here is a better look at the throw.  I could not decide which pattern I wanted.  So I bought one that had all the patterns in it.

DSCN1075

On the other wall, I have a clock that I found at a yard sale about 15 years ago.  We had just moved back to Texas from living overseas and we had just bought a house, the lady I bought this from was moving out of the only home that she ever lived in.  I thought (and still do) that it was appropriate for it to enter our home, used and well-loved.

DSCN1084

Finally, I added a Bavarian painted box to hold a few of my favorite decorating books in.  This was one of my first purchases in the early 1990s when we first lived in Germany.  I have always thought of it as my first treasure!

DSCN1106

This corner is a little getaway.  We spend many hours reading, nature gazing, and planning sitting in the chair.  Being surrounded by things that have become characters in our lives is what I think a home should be.

Being formal is not us. Our home is.  Nothing fancy, but so full of memories and love.
